The three weeks in Detroit saw a lot of cast birthdays, including Steffi D's, Justin Scott Brown's, and Taylor Trensch's. Fan Friday: The Greenville Stage Door
The experience of Spring Awakening does not end after the house lights come up. On this blog, we announce the location of the stage door in every city we go to because we love talking with our fans. Not every Broadway show will have such an open policy or such generous company members. In fact, you may have seen many touring productions in your town and never, ever, entertained the notion of meeting the cast afterwards! It's rarely done, especially on tour. But know that at Spring Awakening, we welcome it. Perhaps it's because having audience members sit on stage with us makes the whole experience more intimate. Or because we see so many repeat customers and start recognizing faces. Most likely, it's because we share the same passion for the show that you do. If you've never done it before, this video by xNeonBwayx and photos by Randy WIlliams--both from the Peace Center in Greenville SC a few weeks ago-- will give you a better idea of what you can expect.

Class Assignment: First Day of Spring
Class Assignment: First Day of Spring
The first day of spring is tomorrow! You can smell it in the air! In today's class, we found an anonymous poem about the awakening of spring and made a mad lib out of it. Company members were asked to fill in adjectives, nouns and verbs in the missing spaces. Well, we got some really creative and funny responses that we wanted to share and hope you enjoy it. A single bulbus leaf was spotted today.
Through the hummus the vinaigrette is peeking.
Leprechauns are about and flesh-seeking.

A single warm smile was spotted today.
Through the clouds the sun is peeking.

A veteran of the road, Christy has been with the tour since day one and answers your questions, from her thoughts on working with multiple Melchiors to her favorite fan gifts (Graeters ice cream - my fav too!). Spring Awakening named "Most Important Musical of the Decade"
Many theatre critics posted their end of the decade wrap ups over the break and Spring Awakening was mentioned frequently in their lists of the best productions of the decade. This is a huge honor for us.

Fan Friday Video: Denver's Meet and Greet with the Cast
One of the top prizes for the Guilty One Street Team members who earn enough points is a MEET AND GREET with the Spring Awakening Tour cast. Kat, one of our Denver Guilty Ones, posted this awesome video from the Denver Meet and Greet at the Hard Rock Cafe.
What makes this video filled with awesomeness? Kat's own "Hot Minute" questions for our cast members such as "what is your internet vice?" and "what flavor popsicle would you be?" See how the cast responded. The video also features some really cool shoes worn by Steffi D and Jake beat bopping to Lady Gaga's "Christmas Tree" with the street team! Another nice surprise? Class Assignment: Most Kick Ass Halloween Costume?
It's time for another Class Assignment. We asked our cast, crew and musicians, "What was the most *kick ass* Halloween costume you've ever had?" Here are the answers we received. Thought everyone would find this a-moo-sing.
Taylor Trensch
I am extremely passionate about Halloween costumes so, in my opinion, they have all been totally awesome. Most recently I was a sock monkey, Ash Ketchum, and DJ Samantha Ronson. As far as this year's costume goes I am having a hard time deciding between Peewee Herman (who is making a comeback!) and Arthur the aardvark (of PBS fame).

My most kick ass Halloween costume was definitely when I was 5 years old and I dressed up as Jasmine from Aladdin. Because still to this day, I want to be her. She was my favorite Disney Princess back then and it was my favorite movie. I would watch that movie like everyday and dream about being Jasmine in real life, so when I got to be her on Halloween, it was the best.

I know this sounds utterly ridiculous, but in 7th grade, I went as Mt. Rushmore for a Halloween costume contest. I have no idea how I came up with that crazy idea. I wore a grey sheet, and doctored up a box with a picture of Mt. Rushmore on it and managed to put my face in the middle of all of the presidents. I somehow managed to win most creative. I wish I had a picture.

Now I've had a lot of kick ass Hallow's Eve costumes in my day. The one that comes to mind- my best one- was possibly my very first Halloween costume. When I was 7, every kid around me wanted to be a vampire, or a zombie, or a Ninja Turtle...but me, I wanted to be a cow. I asked my mom to make a realistic cow costume. It was incredible. Udders, spots, the whole deal. Best costume ever.

I went through this phase where I was obsessed with bows. They became my trademark while I was on Canadian Idol. Senior year, I created a BOW-LERINA costume. I was in a tutu with bows head to toe; millions of them in my hair.

I'm in love with Lady GaGa.
Halloween is the only day of the year where I can be her!

Spring Awakening is another Broadway gift to San Jose. Enjoy it as soon as possible (it’s only here for five days; 6 performances remain after this afternoon’s) and thank the lucky stars (or Dutch company Nederlander) we get to experience something so entertainingly fresh and vibrant. Colorful memories of high school years gone by is just icing on the Kuchen.

I needed..to find out whether “Spring Awakening,” justified all of those theater awards it gathered in 2007, and yes, it did...And, if this is a touring company, one would wonder how much better the original show might have been.
With a “knockout” musical score, this “pop rock” musical is one of those theater works that “snap, crackle and pop,” from the opening until the last delicious spoon full. It is one of those tightly written and symbolic masterpieces of modern musical theater that takes just enough time to say what it needs to and moves on, ultimately, to enter the permanent repertoire of American theater works.
My conclusion: The record number of awards was justified and if you, as I, had missed this production before, now is the time to catch an excellent touring version of a certain future musical classic.

Not since Hair shocked Broadway audiences in 1968, has their been a musical that has so enlivened the genre. Spring Awakening, currently showing right now with the new company - Broadway San Jose - through Sunday, busts down the doors of propriety and jolts us into a teenage reality. Never has there been a musical that so honestly depicts the travails of growing up.
With the departure of our beloved American Musical Theatre of San Jose, the Nederlander Corporation is doing a wonderful job of bringing Broadway to the South Bay. I miss AMTSJ very much for a myriad of reasons, but I am glad that Nederlander seems to be making a valiant effort to keep us in the Broadway loop so to speak.
