The Bitch of 40

They don't always get the limelight, but amongst the many teens and twenty-somethings in the SA cast, there lies two lone "Adults" who incredibly pull off multi-character performances every night. Angela Reed, who plays "The Adult Women," recently turned the big 4-0 and the Bitch of Living boys decided to seranade her with their own rendition of "The Bitch of 40." Enjoy this riff on a classic SA tune. Lyrics by Adult Man understudy Todd Cerveris.

What's The Matter With You, Melchior??

The cast spent their first week in Baltimore trapped inside the beautiful Hippodrome theatre in rehearsals, bringing Jake Epstein and Krista Pioppi up to speed. Rehearsing during the day, performing at night--leaving the cast exhausted and just a little loopy. While they wanted to take in more of Baltimore, they were stuck coming up with ways to entertain themselves including coming up with Kyle's brand new reality show aptly titled "What's The Problem with You Melchior" - a true life, in depth look into the trials, tribulations, and love troubles of a young star.  Guest stars include Blake Bashoff, Gabby garza, Kimiko Glenn, and many others of the wonderful Spring Awakening cast.

All Shall Know the Wonder.

A Moment in Spring Awakening History

Some of you may already be following Lucas Well's blog, but this bears re-posting because on the historic day of Friday, May 29th, in Pittsburgh, PA, Lucas became the only person in Spring Awakening history to have played both the Moritz AND the Melchoir track. I'm sure you can only imagine his excitement when he got the news...

Here is an excerpt from his blog:

To MY surprise, I was not even shocked, or nervous. Just very anxious. I couldn’t wait to begin, and the only nerves I had was because I would be playing opposite one of my best friends in the world: Blake.

Before the show, I had excessive rehearsal, because there are technical things Melchior has to do that we cannot learn in rehearsals normally until you go on, and took care of that. By the time everything was said and done... I was standing behind the curtain, behind Steffi D, and in front of Blake when I felt a touch at my back, and Blake said some kind words of encouragement to keep me grounded and know that I was going to do great out there.

It went AMAZING. Blake and my chemistry was incredible. Christy and mine was also. I felt amazing vocally, and even better in the scene work. As I was doing the choreography on the platform under the florescent blue nights in MBN, for half a second I caught myself in awe of what I was actually doing. It was something I had only dreamt of doing in my life. Literally. I knew from the moment I saw the show that I would at some point play the role of Melchior, and it finally came true. After that brief moment, I pulled it back in, and reeled into the moment with Christy.

After everything was over... I walked off stage and softly began to cry a bit. I couldn’t believe I had just done what I did. I had now done something no one in Spring Awakening History has ever done before : play both the roles of Melchior and Moritz. Blake and Christy were there to greet me on the other side of the other side of the stage.

It was a surreal moment in my life.

New Video: alums from Boston Colleges

We have an unusually high number of cast and company members who went or are going to college in the Boston area. Many people submitted questions for Gabby's profile of the month asking her about her experience in college, so Krystina Alabado decided to create a little video interview with all of our Boston area college alums for you. Featured are Gabrielle Garza, Kimiko Glenn, Chase Davidson, Freddy Hall, and Ben Moss (getting ready to go on as Anna). Anyone else considering or are studying the performing arts in college? If you have any advice to give, please leave a comment below!

Baltimore Guilty Ones in Action

The Guilty Ones Street Team in Baltimore have worked long and tirelessly to promote Spring Awakening before we got into town. They've gone to Orioles games, art festivals, malls in the area, and even spoke in classes at different universities about the show. We thank each and every one of you!

Our Baltimore Guilty Ones coordinator, Kelly Fey, made a great video of the team as they spread the SA love at Camden Yards and Oriole park. Afterwards, everyone got free tickets to see "Movin' Out" and discussed some of the interesting conversations they had while flyering. Don't miss the story of the lonely security guard who was a secret Guilty One and meet the original model for the Wendla/Melchoir "Embrace" poster!

Any Street Team members have other interesting flyering stories to share? Leave a comment below!

Baltimore, you now have only one more week to see us at the Hippodrome! Get Movin'!

What Would You Do? WASHINGTON DC

Our next extended stay on the tour is a four week stint in our nation's capital, Washington DC July 7-Aug 2nd.

The cast loves being in a city for a longer period of time. They get the rare opportunity to explore a city in depth.

Do you live in DC? Or know it well? Give the cast some advice. Where do the locals hang that tourists don't know about? What fun things and good food can't we miss?

We're also open to suggestions for fun video ideas specific to DC.

Please submit your suggestions as a comment below before end of day on Friday June 19th.

Do you have special access to get us in somewhere unique and special? If so, email us privately: totallytruckedblog at gmail dot com.

Your suggestions will be compiled into The "Fan's Guide to DC" for the cast. Thank you!

New Video! Exceptional Women

Exceptional Women of Spring Awakening
It's no exception that Steffi D, Krystina Alabado, and Christy Altomare are "exceptional women" of Spring Awakening, so while in Boston it was a given that they perform their exceptionally talented skills at the "Exceptional Women" conference. This luncheon is a prestigious annual event in Boston. Check out our women as they sing "Mamma Whoe Bore Me," reprise and all, and inject some rock into the festivities.

Next Profile of the Month: Blake Bashoff

In preparation for our stop in always sunny Phildelphia, our next profile of the month will be BLAKE BASHOFF. Blake was born in the city of brotherly love.

Submit your questions for Blake as a comment below.

Blake might have already answered some of your questions in this interview he did with Christy Altomare last week while the cast was in Louisville, KY. In it, he mentions how he keeps his voice healthy, his pre-show ritual, how he heard about the auditions, the difference between acting in the show and acting on TV, when he might leave (!!), the person who's career he'd like to have (the answer will surprise you), and more. A must read: http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009906050358

By the way, Christy is also from just outside Philadelphia!

Questions for Blake are due by noon on Sunday June 14th.

Gabby's Profile of the Month Part II

Here it is, guys, the second part of Gabby's Profile of the Month. It's hilarious. Enjoy!

Here are the all questions asked in Parts I and II:

1. Meli from T.O. asks:

Hi Gabby!!! i was just wondering what really got you into musical theater? [Anonymous adds:] Were you in shows growing up, and if so, which ones?

2. Angelo (from Guam) asks:

First of all I just want to say you're awesome. : )

What were your expectations when you were still in Emerson College? Did you like Emerson?

3. Mel asks:

Hey Gabby! You are amazing in the show! I love your singing voice, and you're so sweet at the stage dooor! Question:

What was your audition experience for Spring Awakening like? What did you sing for them? [Anonymous adds:] Which cast members did you meet during your audition?

4. Nicole asks:

If you were Queen for the day, what rules would you enforce and what would you make everyone do?

5. Anonymous asks:

When you meet fans at the stage door, do you sometimes get annoyed with signing autographs over and over?

6. Anonymous asks:

Do you have a celebrity crush? if so, who is it?

7. Anonymous asks:

Hey Gabby!!

Do you guys have fun making the extended run videos? Any funny moments/memories while filming?

8. Laura asks:

GABBY! :)

- if you had to pick someone from the cast as your room mate for a year, who would it be? why?

9. Anonymous asks:

Hey Gabby & co!

What's the story behind "BELLY MAMBA" & is it improv?

LOVE THE SHOW AND LOVE YOU GUYS MORE..

10. Lauren asks:

You're known as quite the Fashionista amongst your fellow cast members. What are you favorite brands/designers? I'm curious.

BONUS QUESTION:

Mark asks:

If you were to be on America's Next Top Model, what would be your signature walk (you totally have to show it though - lol). I know it's silly-have fun! And LA misses you and the cast.

First Time Away...a message from Steffi D

As many of you know, Steffi D has taken a week's vacation from the show (the reason why below). The understudies have been subbing in and have been getting rave reviews. Check out this awesome review from the Louisville Courier Journal:

http://www.courierjournal.com/article/20090603/SCENE/90603012/+Spring+Awakening++rocks+Kentucky+Center

and here's a TV interview with Andy and Ben:

http://video.yahoo.com/watch/5227836/13798797

Steffi is missing everyone so much that she wrote a letter to all the fans. It may vaguely remind you of another letter you might have heard:

Dear Spring Awakening Fans... Guilty Ones.

I've spent the entire day thinking about this note.

Truly it touched me, it did, that perhaps you have noticed my absence on the S.A Tour... Of course, I was saddened to hear that I wouldn't be in Louisville.

I must say straight away that I am currently back in Canada, hard at work shooting Seasons 3 and 4 of a French Canadian television series called "Moitie Moitie", (which means "half and half") where I am reprising the role of Audrey.

Two years ago, I filmed Seasons 1 and 2. And now, the public is asking for more!

You would do me wrong, Guitly Ones, to read into my absence as a permanent thing, on the contrary, I will be returning to the Spring Awakening tour for our Opening Night in Baltimore on June 9, 2009!

Should you like, here are some clips from the past 2 seasons:

Clips from Episode 1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =5iaoZB62O-8

You can also find full episodes from seasons 1 and 2 on Dailymotion.com!

I will try to convince you that I also sing the theme song of the show!!

My dear Guitly Ones, my script is filled with lines; long lines, short lines, monologues even, that I better go learn. In any case, I assure you that I start bright and early tomorrow morning and all week!

So, sit tight, Guilty Ones! And you will hear from me soon.

In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled on my YouTube Channel: SteffiD5, for a Moitie Moitie video blog, coming soon. I am unchangingly and most fondly yours...

See you in Baltimore!!!

Love and Blue Wind,
Steffi D

Jake Epstein from Degrassi Joins Spring Awakening (exclusive video)

We are happy to announce that Jake Epstein from Degrassi: The Next Generation will take over for Kyle Riabko in the role of Melchoir on the national tour. While we are sad to see Kyle go, we wish him all the best in his exciting career. Kyle's last stop will be Philadelphia and Jake will officially kick off his run in Washington DC on July 7th.

We have exclusive video of Jake singing a song from Spring Awakening with our cast members while they were in Toronto. As many of you know, Jake was in the Toronto cast of "Dog Sees God" which our cast members saw early in their Toronto run. They decided to do a cabaret together. Here is Jake with fellow Dog Sees God members Alex Saslove and Paula Brancati (also from Degrassi) with our cast members Krystina Alabado, Sarah Hunt, Julie Benko. Anthony Lee Medina and Matt Shingledecker sing back up vocals! Enjoy this exclusive rendition of "The Dark I Know So Well:"

Here's the official press release:

Jake Epstein Joins the Cast of Spring Awakening National Tour

Degrassi star to take over lead the role of “Melchior Gabor” beginning July 7

June 2, 2009 - The producers of Spring Awakening announced today that Jake Esptein, best known for his work as “Craig” on the hit television series “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” will take over the lead role of “Melchior Gabor” in the national touring production of the Tony Award®-winning musical, beginning July 7 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Jake Epstein

A 22-year-old, Toronto-born actor, Epstein has already been working in theatre, film and television for more than a decade. Theatre credits include Cameron MacKintosh’s Oliver! (Artful Dodger), Dog Sees God, Cinderella, Dangerous Liaisons and Our Town. Television and Film credits include leading roles on “The Zack Files,” and “Degrassi: The Next Generation (Gemini Award)” as well as appearances on “Charlie Bartlett,” “Crown Heights,” “Quints,” “Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire,” “Paradise Falls,” “Angela’s Eyes,” “Radio Free Roscoe,” “The Eleventh Hour”and “Being Erica.” He recently graduated from the prestigious National Theatre School of Canada, where he had the opportunity to work with Canada’s leading directors and artists. Spring Awakening is based on the 1891 Frank Wedekind play of the same name, and features an electrifying score by Duncan Sheik, book and lyrics by Steven Sater, direction by Michael Mayer, and choreography by the award-winning Bill T. Jones. The production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical (2007).

Set against the backdrop of a repressive and provincial late 19th century Germany, Spring Awakening tells the timeless story of adolescent self-discovery and budding sexuality as seen through the eyes of three teenagers. Haunting and provocative, Spring Awakening celebrates an unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood with a power, a poignancy and a passion you will never forget.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can I send fan mail to the cast?

If you just want to send a quick note to all the cast members telling them you appreciate their work, you can email us here at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. I will be happy to forward your email to the cast, but to preserve their privacy, it is unlikely they will email you back (I will, though).

You can also send individual performers fan mail and care packages care of the theatre at which we are currently performing or will be performing. Go to the theatre's website (listed above), find their mailing address, write the actor's name as well as "Spring Awakening" and send c/o the theatre. Remember, we are often at these theatres for only a week so make sure to allow for delivery times. It's a better bet to send it to the theatre we will be going to next as they can always hold packages for us until we arrive. Letters received late will not be forwarded to our next location.

2. How Can I Audition for Spring Awakening?
From time to time, we have open calls in larger cities across the US. We will post any additional open calls here. Subscribe if you havn't already to keep informed. In the meantime, we've made it easy for you to submit yourself singing a folk/alternative rock song on video. Go to: http://www.springawakening.com/videoauditionsubmission/ Make sure your submission is less than 500 MB and is one of the accepted formats. Your screen should change and you should get a confirmation that says your submission has been received. Trust us, people are called in this way. Lucas Wells was cast because of an online submission!

3. How Do I Score On Stage Seats?
That is really up to the individual theatres. Most of them won't release the seats until just before performances because they want to make sure the house is sold first. Some do so online, although the ticketing systems they have in place often can't accommodate our unique seats onstage. Most of them are available only at the box office (though you can purchase them for a performance in the future). The Guilty Ones Street Team members have the rights to purchase these seats before the general public. Any seats left over will be released to the box office and may also be purchased as part of rush tickets (discounted, day-of tickets).

4. How Do I Join The Guilty Ones?

The National Guilty Ones Street Team is a way for fans of the show in each of our tour stops to help us spread the word. You will get access to parties, meet and greets, and other special events while meeting new friends who share your passion for the show, all while gaining some valuable marketing experience. You must be at least 15 yrs old. Email your contact info to nationalguiltyones (at) gmail (dot) com.

5. Can I Get Discounts?

From time to time, a theatre may offer us discounts to send out to our fans. We will post any here on the blog. Subscribe now!

6. Who runs this site? This site was created for fans to stay connected with our touring cast and follow their adventures around North America. Ideally, it would be in the voice of the cast members. Unfortunately, our cast members are often too tired or busy to post lengthy blog posts on a regular basis. Company members will contribute a post from time to time and every month we will have a compiled blog post that most every company member will participate in. The other stuff like updates, etc, will be posted by me. My name is Pun. I work for the production, love this show, its cast, and our fans, and I'm so very glad you're here!
