New TotallyTrucked Video: M&M's - An Obsession Gone Wrong
What better way to celebrate Halloween than with a delectable basket full of M&M's! Jake Epstein crashes Christy Altomare's hotel room and conjures up a fascinating idea to consecrate Wendla's and Melchi's love with their mutual obsession of the candy that melts in your mouth, not in your hand. A little bit creepy, a whole lot of funny. Happy Halloween!

Class Assignment: Most Kick Ass Halloween Costume?
It's time for another Class Assignment. We asked our cast, crew and musicians, "What was the most *kick ass* Halloween costume you've ever had?" Here are the answers we received. Thought everyone would find this a-moo-sing.
Taylor Trensch
I am extremely passionate about Halloween costumes so, in my opinion, they have all been totally awesome. Most recently I was a sock monkey, Ash Ketchum, and DJ Samantha Ronson. As far as this year's costume goes I am having a hard time deciding between Peewee Herman (who is making a comeback!) and Arthur the aardvark (of PBS fame).
Krystina Alabado
My most kick ass Halloween costume was definitely when I was 5 years old and I dressed up as Jasmine from Aladdin. Because still to this day, I want to be her. She was my favorite Disney Princess back then and it was my favorite movie. I would watch that movie like everyday and dream about being Jasmine in real life, so when I got to be her on Halloween, it was the best.
Matt Shingledecker
I know this sounds utterly ridiculous, but in 7th grade, I went as Mt. Rushmore for a Halloween costume contest. I have no idea how I came up with that crazy idea. I wore a grey sheet, and doctored up a box with a picture of Mt. Rushmore on it and managed to put my face in the middle of all of the presidents. I somehow managed to win most creative. I wish I had a picture.
Kimiko Glenn
I guess the costume I am most proud of would have to be Quail man from Doug.
Jake Epstein
Now I've had a lot of kick ass Hallow's Eve costumes in my day. The one that comes to mind- my best one- was possibly my very first Halloween costume. When I was 7, every kid around me wanted to be a vampire, or a zombie, or a Ninja Turtle...but me, I wanted to be a cow. I asked my mom to make a realistic cow costume. It was incredible. Udders, spots, the whole deal. Best costume ever.
Steffi D
Most kick ass costume to date:
I went through this phase where I was obsessed with bows. They became my trademark while I was on Canadian Idol. Senior year, I created a BOW-LERINA costume. I was in a tutu with bows head to toe; millions of them in my hair.
(Here's a picture of me as a child dressed as a princess for Halloween)
This year:
I'm in love with Lady GaGa.
Halloween is the only day of the year where I can be her!
[Blogmaster note: Erm, I don't know if I have to say this, but for those who are really gullible, that was the only "real" picture of the cast members featured on this blog post. Ain't she kewt...? Oh yeah, and we all wanted to wish you...]

News Wrap Up: 4 Star Reviews Spring Awakening in San Jose
Wow! Reviews for Spring Awakening in San Jose are just stellar. We couldn't have asked for more love... Check them out:
San Jose Mercury News Review
Review: 'Spring Awakening' rocks San Jose
The daring new musical "Spring Awakening" rocked so hard it took Silicon Valley by storm Wednesday night. An electric jolt of youthful angst and yearning that revolutionized the usually staid genre of Broadway, this musical is perhaps the coolest one ever to grace San Jose's Center for the Performing Arts, where it runs through Sunday.
This audacious mash-up of 19th-century themes and cutting-edge alt-rock takes our breath away from start to finish. Frank Wedekind's once-scandalous 1891 tragedy about adolescents awash in lust, fear and chaos is now the height of hip. The Tony-winning rock musical is worshipped by flocks of teens known as "Guilty Ones," many of whom were texting like maniacs at the intermission....

Metro San Jose Review
Spring Soars
The acclaimed Broadway musical about growing up in the 1890s in a small German town is more than one thing; it is not easy to define and file away in an alphabetized sock drawer. This show is a collision of a rock spectacle and a powerhouse musical that expresses the angst and inner turmoil of growing up in an oppressive society. And just like the musical itself, the children are not just students. They are lovers, explorers, dreamers and pirates who remind the audience that no matter what the time period or the place, there were always children who felt that anxious tug when they turned from caterpillar to butterfly.

Theater review: ‘Spring Awakening’ delivers Broadway hit to San Jose in style
...what makes Spring Awakening so good, is how it all comes together so well. The music blends in with the story, carrying our emotions along for a rocking (and occasionally, joyfully loud) ride. In between the exciting drum and guitar work, though, there is character depth, and meaning behind actions. We feel and relate to their circumstances. Better yet, we are drawn to Melchior’s intelligent perspective, documented in his journal, that prevents the following events from becoming standard melodrama.
Spring Awakening is another Broadway gift to San Jose. Enjoy it as soon as possible (it’s only here for five days; 6 performances remain after this afternoon’s) and thank the lucky stars (or Dutch company Nederlander) we get to experience something so entertainingly fresh and vibrant. Colorful memories of high school years gone by is just icing on the Kuchen.

I needed..to find out whether “Spring Awakening,” justified all of those theater awards it gathered in 2007, and yes, it did...And, if this is a touring company, one would wonder how much better the original show might have been.
With a “knockout” musical score, this “pop rock” musical is one of those theater works that “snap, crackle and pop,” from the opening until the last delicious spoon full. It is one of those tightly written and symbolic masterpieces of modern musical theater that takes just enough time to say what it needs to and moves on, ultimately, to enter the permanent repertoire of American theater works.
My conclusion: The record number of awards was justified and if you, as I, had missed this production before, now is the time to catch an excellent touring version of a certain future musical classic.

Not since Hair shocked Broadway audiences in 1968, has their been a musical that has so enlivened the genre. Spring Awakening, currently showing right now with the new company - Broadway San Jose - through Sunday, busts down the doors of propriety and jolts us into a teenage reality. Never has there been a musical that so honestly depicts the travails of growing up.
With the departure of our beloved American Musical Theatre of San Jose, the Nederlander Corporation is doing a wonderful job of bringing Broadway to the South Bay. I miss AMTSJ very much for a myriad of reasons, but I am glad that Nederlander seems to be making a valiant effort to keep us in the Broadway loop so to speak.

Q: Why did you choose to try out for "Spring Awakening"? More specifically, what is it about the play that particularly drew you to this role?
A: Well, I saw the show on Broadway in 2006 and just completely fell in love with it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, like I was just on the edge of my seat the whole time. I had chills for half the play. I thought it was just the amalgamation of rock music and theater, and I just thought it was so cool. Two years later I (actually went to) an open call in Toronto, my home, 'cause I heard they were looking for replacements on Broadway. ...
Q:In "Degrassi" you played a brooding musician with bipolar disorder and in "Spring Awakening" you play a kind of rebellious trickster who leads his classmates against

society. So, why did you want to play a character so drastically different from Craig?
A: (laughs) Well, it's funny. I don't even think of it as that totally different from Craig. I mean, I brought so much of myself to "Degrassi," and I think in the same way I sort of related a lot to some of Melchior in "Spring Awakening" as well. So, yes, they are two completely different characters, but I think of them as parts of myself. And I think if anything, it's actually the opposite — that I recognized parts of myself in these characters and (it) made me want to play them, not that they were so different, but the fact that I could relate to them.

A little bit of fun, a little bit of madness in Washington DC! While visiting our nation's capitol, our cast took some time to see the uber scary flick 'Orphan' along with Zachary Reiner-Harris, visiting us from the Broadway cast.
The second vid is some hotel room madness, fresh from the exhilarating success of the cabaret..the benefit, not the musical. Spring Awakening was able to raise more than $5000 for the Make A Wish Foundation as a result of this cabaret, helping to create moments of joy for children living with terminal illnesses. Fan Friday Video: Domestic Violence Awareness Month
For this week's Fan Friday, we are honored to feature Lisa, a fan who created this profound and moving video to call attention to National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The National Bar Association estimates that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. It crosses all class and racial lines and
affects not just the households it tears asunder, but the entire community in which we live. As Spring Awakening shows, these tragedies are not isolated incidents, but are systemic of a culture that chooses to sanction violence and which, all too often, silences its victims. What are the ways that our society institutionalizes violence? What lessons do we learn growing up that perpetuate a belief that violence is OK? What is our responsibility as a community and as individuals to end violence?
Thank you, Lisa, for creating this video for all the Marthas and Ilses in the world living in fear and shame who do not have a voice and must suffer "The Dark I Know Well" in silence:
There is help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is a non-profit organization that provides crisis intervention, information and referral to victims of domestic violence, perpetrators, friends and families.

Spring Awakening Tour: On the Break - Charleston
"On the Break" is our series of vids that were taken during the 7-week hiatus from August through September 2009. Matt Shingledecker went back home to Charleston, SC ---where they KNOW that clothes make the man-- with friend and castmate Krystina Alabado. They were driving by Citadel Military college when who should they spy walking on the side of the road on her way to see her boyfriend? Enjoy this last tribute video to SA alum Claire Sparks who is off on her own college adventures! We can't wait for the show to come to Greenville, SC! Imagine seeing ALL our boys in bow ties...?

Video: Equality March: Spring Awakening Cast says "Let's Get This Done!"
Spring Awakening Tour: Equality March Let's Get This Done!:
Frank Wedekind, the author of Spring Awakening, wrote a daring and controversial play in the late 1890s that pushed the social boundaries of not only his era, but continue to be topics of taboo even to this day. Same sex relationships continue their fight for equal rights even in the 21st century and on this past weekend, on Sunday, October 11, 2009, tens of thousands of activists across the country, including many Broadway performers, descended upon Washington DC to give voice to the cause.
The cast of Spring Awakening were in Milwaukee and could not attend the march but decided to spread the message the best they know how - SA style! Check it out and continue the fight!

SPRING AWAKENING--CAN A MUSICAL CHANGE YOUR LIFE?
Every once in a while, we get a story that really touches our heart. We posted a write-in contest here last week for people in Kansas City to win tickets by posting their coming of age story on the Kansas City Examiner.com. The winning entry is from a person that found our music online which helped them get over the suicide of their best friend and their own thoughts of suicide. Here is the story, in his/her own words:
Two short years ago, my friend Josh Overton killed himself. When I found out, I felt my life was forever changed. I went through a "dark stage" where I myself turned suicidal. One night, I was searching iTunes and found the soundtrack to Spring Awakening, I clicked on the song entitled "Left Behind". It explained everything I was feeling in a 3 minute song. I downloaded the CD and fell in love with the story. It is hard to admit, but a musical saved my life. Everyday that goes by, I think of Josh and everything he left behind, I am still heart broken and I still miss him. His 19th birthday just passed, he would be in college. He would later get married, he would have kids, he would have a family. It is hard to think of his life that he will never live. I miss him. If I did not discover this musical, I would be where Josh is. I owe my life to Spring Awakening. A chance to see this musical would be a dream come true. I miss you Josh. You will never be forgotten.

FAN FRIDAY: Sara's Moritz Drawing
Sara P submitted this drawing of Moritz to us and we think it's so cool that we're gonna feature it. Thanks for sharing your love of SA with the world, Sara! If you have something you'd like to share, email us at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. Leave a comment below and tell Sara what you thought.
We asked Sara to talk about the drawing and her love for SA. Here's what she said:
Hey totally trucked! Thanks so much for being interested in my drawing. I'm 18 years old and I'm from Minneapolis, Minnesota originally but I go to school at Michigan State University in East Lansing. I'm a huge fan of spring awakening and have been since I saw it last year when the tour came to Minneapolis. I had no idea what to expect but I was completely blown away. The show to me is just overall amazing. I absolutely love the tour cast! Blake Bashoff is my favorite actor and Moritz is my favorite character (which I why I chose him for the drawing). I really enjoy the music, Don't do sadness/ blue wind is my favorite song from the show. I like how the whole story line is relevant today and I think it sends a really strong message.
Tomorrow I am going all the way to Milwaukee from East Lansing, MI just to see the show again. I plan on going to the stage door to meet the cast! Too bad Blake Bashoff won't be there.. My friends and I are still really excited to meet everyone and see the show again!
Thanks so much totally trucked for picking my drawing! It's an honor.
-Sara P.
Ps- the drawing is done in graphite drawing pencil in case you wanted to know.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How can I send fan mail to the cast?
If you just want to send a quick note to all the cast members telling them you appreciate their work, you can email us here at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. I will be happy to forward your email to the cast, but to preserve their privacy, it is unlikely they will email you back (I will, though).
You can also send individual performers fan mail and care packages care of the theatre at which we are currently performing or will be performing. Go to the theatre's website (listed above), find their mailing address, write the actor's name as well as "Spring Awakening" and send c/o the theatre. Remember, we are often at these theatres for only a week so make sure to allow for delivery times. It's a better bet to send it to the theatre we will be going to next as they can always hold packages for us until we arrive. Letters received late will not be forwarded to our next location.
2. How Can I Audition for Spring Awakening?
From time to time, we have open calls in larger cities across the US. We will post any additional open calls here. Subscribe if you havn't already to keep informed. In the meantime, we've made it easy for you to submit yourself singing a folk/alternative rock song on video. Go to: http://www.springawakening.com/videoauditionsubmission/ Make sure your submission is less than 500 MB and is one of the accepted formats. Your screen should change and you should get a confirmation that says your submission has been received. Trust us, people are called in this way. Lucas Wells was cast because of an online submission!
3. How Do I Score On Stage Seats?
That is really up to the individual theatres. Most of them won't release the seats until just before performances because they want to make sure the house is sold first. Some do so online, although the ticketing systems they have in place often can't accommodate our unique seats onstage. Most of them are available only at the box office (though you can purchase them for a performance in the future). The Guilty Ones Street Team members have the rights to purchase these seats before the general public. Any seats left over will be released to the box office and may also be purchased as part of rush tickets (discounted, day-of tickets).
4. How Do I Join The Guilty Ones?
The National Guilty Ones Street Team is a way for fans of the show in each of our tour stops to help us spread the word. You will get access to parties, meet and greets, and other special events while meeting new friends who share your passion for the show, all while gaining some valuable marketing experience. You must be at least 15 yrs old. Email your contact info to nationalguiltyones (at) gmail (dot) com.
5. Can I Get Discounts?
From time to time, a theatre may offer us discounts to send out to our fans. We will post any here on the blog. Subscribe now!
6. Who runs this site? This site was created for fans to stay connected with our touring cast and follow their adventures around North America. Ideally, it would be in the voice of the cast members. Unfortunately, our cast members are often too tired or busy to post lengthy blog posts on a regular basis. Company members will contribute a post from time to time and every month we will have a compiled blog post that most every company member will participate in. The other stuff like updates, etc, will be posted by me. My name is Pun. I work for the production, love this show, its cast, and our fans, and I'm so very glad you're here!
