It was a swing awakening in Louisville which created a lot of firsts. See Krista's 1st time ever, Krystina's extended Ilse run, and, as we had made public in a previous post, Lucas Wells makes Spring Awakening history by being the ONLY person who has played both Melchior and Moritz...crazy cool.

Opening Night in Louisville
Earlier this week, y'all saw the sluggishness of the company as they rolled into Louisville after an eight hour bus ride. Well, that sluggishness soon wore off and became converted to excitement as the cast prepped for their opening night. Little did they know that the enthusiastic responses of the awesome people in Louisville would keep them energized the whole week through. In this video, you'll take a tour of the boy's and girl's dressing rooms at the Kentucky Center. In the girl's room, Krystina prepares to go on as Ilse while the boys, meanwhile, are rocking out to that OTHER groundbreaking Broadway musical which dared to talk about sex: HAIR. Take a look see:

Video: 8 Hours to Louisville
Most of our cast videos have shown the fun antics of the road, but in-between the excitement of playing in new cities comes the necessary grind of getting to the next stop. Packing up, traffic nightmares, delays at the airport...or in this case, having to endure a LONG ASS bus ride filled with endless plains and Cracker Barrels. A picnic in a Wendy's parking lot gives them a much needed break from bus torture. Ah, the often-times not too glamorous side of life on the road...but we wouldn't have it any other way, would we? And with this cast at least, spirits are always high once they finally reach their destination: Louisville!

Fan Friday: I Believe
We don't do Fan Fridays every week any more, but from time to time, a letter from a fan really touches us.
This is from Erin R., an 11th grade student who saw Spring Awakening in Boston. She had to write an essay for school describing what she believes. She has given us permission to share an excerpt from it:
"At the beginning of the school year I put my name down to attend a theater field trip to see the new rock musical Spring Awakening. At the time I had no idea what I signed up for, besides a day off from school. As I entered the Colonial Theater, walked up the million stairs to the balcony seats where I was sitting and took my seat, I remember thinking about the beauty of my surroundings. But the theater itself was nothing compared to what I witnessed on that stage. I was sitting as far away from the stage as humanly possible, and yet I was completely immersed in this new world. I felt more from that show than I have felt from anything I have ever experienced before. I can honestly say that this inspirational piece of art changed me in a way that I can never forget. As the cast bowed on the stage I knew that this was it; this was the one thing in the world that I am meant to do. After the audience left the theater, I was lucky enough to meet the cast as they came out of the stage doors. I met them, and took pictures with them. I realized that they were average people, just like me, who took a chance, and by luck, skill, passion, or some combination of the three, achieved their dreams. On the bus ride home, I felt it deep down in my soul that I needed to have that moment on the stage; I needed to touch people the way that this show touched me.
This newfound drive in me will never end. My passion has been awakened by this inspirational and moving piece of theater. The only thing in life that I want to do is be able to give this feeling of inspiration to one other person, because without this motivation, my life would always be missing something. The need to perform and spread this emotion to others, to spread this sensation, is all that I can do. With this pulse of inspiration, I can change the world, even if it is only one person’s; I can make a difference. I believe in the power of inspiration."
Thank you, Erin! We're so happy that we could inspire you! And we know you will go on to inspire others.

Reviews--Spring Awakening at the Kennedy Center, DC

WASHINGTON POST
It's a lot hotter inside the Kennedy Center these days, and the thermometer hasn't budged one bit. The altered state is a matter of tone rather than climate, its source the turbulent stylings of the Eisenhower Theater's new summer tenant: that splendidly soul-stirring musical of raging teenage hormones, "Spring Awakening."
WASHINGTON TIMES (4 OUT OF 4 STARS!)
The radical scholar Melchior (Jake Epstein, from "De Grassi High: The Next Generation," appealingly broody and intense) is more textbook-experienced in sexual matters, and he strives to put his knowledge into practice with the almost tragically innocent Wendla (Christy Altomare, agleam with vulnerability and hope). Sexuality also is expressed as release — with Hanschen (Andy Mientus, a suave seducer) self-pleasuring in "My Junk" to the meter of Desdemona's death scene from "Othello" — or as a means of control, as Martha (an affecting Sarah Hunt) painfully relates in "The Dark I Know Well." Experimentation is even depicted, with an awkward attempt at S&M and, later, same-sex canoodling ("The Word of Your Body").
Also some great features.
This one, in the Washington Post, talks about how rock music is changing musical theatre and Spring Awakening is featured prominently: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/03/AR2009070300067.html

The Onion
As the great sage Bristol Palin once told People magazine, "If girls realized the consequences of sex, nobody would be having sex. Trust me. Nobody."
As the teens in the musical cope with their growing urges and nocturnal emissions, one sexually enlightened student, Melchior (Jake Epstein), writes an explanatory pamphlet—sort of an illustrated, Germanic Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

DCist (Blog)
Invigorating! With so many cookie cutter musicals and anemic remakes coming out of Broadway, it feels almost a privilege to get a glimpse of one of the more experimental productions to find some New York success...Part of the thrill of Spring Awakening is watching the young but extremely talented cast, clearly in the early stages of their careers.
http://dcist.com/2009/07/an_invigorating_spring_awakening_at.php
DC Theatre Scene.com "Stunning" "Will Blow Your Mind."
Forget the cute marketing advertisements with a free-spirited young couple locked in a sweet embrace with the caption, “You’ll never forget your first time.” Those of us who have seen the show multiple times can attest to Awakening’s tough thematic content and the dark, somber reality of abuse, death, and fragile emotional breaking points just a heart beat away from a fatal snap.

The Sentinel Papers (Suburban Newspapers)
Every generation thinks it is the generation that discovers sex. Currently at the Kennedy Center is a rousing production of the Tony Award winning musical Spring Awakening, which takes a century old play about rebellious youth and adds an adrenaline jolt of contemporary angst to the proceedings. Times may change, but human nature does not.
http://www.thesentinel.com/pgs/entertainment/Spring-Awakening
EDGE (GLBT Newspaper)
It’s won 8 Tonys, and has since gone to rock the theatre world with its presence.
This juggernaut production, which has had descriptions ranging from "rock opera" to "teenage melodrama", is best known as Spring Awakening... a no-holds-barred, extensively urgent tale of very small proportions, painting itself as half neo-realist, half dialectical theatre - a paradox in the making.

Blake Bashoff Profile of the Month Part 1
Blake made some time while in his hometown of Philadelphia to sit down and answer some of your questions. We received a ton of great questions from everyone and am very sorry we could not answer them all, but the questions we chose were the ones that were repeated most often. Thanks to Steffi D for filming this for us. Tune in this Friday for Part Deux.
Video #1: Blake's Profile of the Month
Questions asked in this video:
1. Brooke and Googie:
You've had quite a career! What has been your favorite or most challenging part to play? How did you prepare for the role?
2. Larissa and Ariel:
First, you are a stunning performer (yes, I said Stunning). If you were really “LOST” on a deserted island, what are three things you couldn’t survive without (sorry for the corny play on words) ☺?
3. Hannah (from London, England) and Ally:
What do you think of the differences between Moritz in the original Wedekind play and in the musical? Do you wish there were some things that had stayed the same?
4. Anonymous:
OK-it's just been bothering the snot out of me, I just have to ask-
What happened to the slap in the father/son scene???
I really think it helped the audience to understand Moritz better. Was it you...Was getting smacked 8 times a week just too much for ya?
5. SaraChristine:
Hi Blake! I was just wondering what steps you took getting into the entertainment business because I read that you didn't go to school? Tiffany adds: What are your secrets or tips for actors? Please share!

Class Assignment #3 : ROAD TRIP!!
With the cast on vacation this week, and with hundreds of thousands of people on the road this July 4th weekend, we thought it would be the perfect time to ask the cast to share their road trip stories. So many Spring Awakening fans travel great distances to come see our show, many more than just a few times. We asked our cast: What is the furthest you've traveled to see a band, performer or show? Please describe the experience in two or three sentences (If you have not done this, what act WOULD you be willing to travel for in the future?
MATT SHINGLEDECKER I once drove 8 hours from Charleston, SC to Washington D.C. the summer after I graduated high school to audition for American Idol. I had a friend there and another in Charlottesville, VA who I also saw, but the main reason was the audition.
ANTHONY LEE MEDINA I haven't been to many concerts and considering I'm from New York, Broadway is just a hop, skip and train ride away. However, I would be more than willing to travel to see Kelly Clarkson or Matt Duke perform. I also planned on going with Sarah, Perry and Chase over to London to see and hang out with the Spring Awakening cast but, there closing put a damper on those plans! :-(
JULIE DANIELSON (we miss you, Julie!) When I was 7, my mom's theater company took a roadtrip to Dallas to see the National Tour of PHANTOM. I got carsick, but I still saw the show!
When I was 15, my mom took me on my first trip to NYC to see "Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk" with Savion Glover. We saw his understudy, because Savion was in jail for drug use.
When I was in college, my mom drove with me to Chicago to see my best friend in a drag show. He wasn't in drag - just a backup dancer for alot of other male dancers lip-synching in women's clothes.
In 2005, my family went to London and we had tickets to see the original cast of BILLY ELLIOT. This is really sad, but our tickets were for July 7 and that was the morning that some crazies decided to bomb the London Tube System and the whole city shut down. Luckily, my whole family was safe, but I still was pretty pissed that I didn't get to see the show.
In conclusion, theater is really the only reason I travel.
CHRISTY ALTOMARE I have never traveled a far distance to see anyone perform but I think if I was going to and I had the time - I would travel a distace to see Joni Mitchell perform. She is my absolute inspiration and I think I would be incredibly star struck.
FREDDY HALL Between the ages of 9 and 12 I had a huge obsession with Boyz 2 Men... I made my parents drive me to York PA from Northern Virginia to see them perform at the York County Fair. I was in their fan club so we got front row seats. During one of their songs (I'm pretty sure it was "end of the road") some very nice lady lifted me up and I high fived Nate. I don't think I washed my right hand for a few weeks.
KRYSTINA ALABADO Well, the farthest I've gone to see a show would be when I flew from Phoenix to New York to see my first ever Broadway shows my Junior year of high school. I saw Drowzy Chaperone (loove it), Altar Boyz, and Prelude To A Kiss!
WE WANT AN ARCHIVE OF HOW FAR PEOPLE HAVE TRAVELED TO SEE SPRING AWAKENING. Comment below and tell us your Spring Awakening road trip stories!
HAPPY JULY 4TH! YAY SUMMER!!!!

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How can I send fan mail to the cast?
If you just want to send a quick note to all the cast members telling them you appreciate their work, you can email us here at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. I will be happy to forward your email to the cast, but to preserve their privacy, it is unlikely they will email you back (I will, though).
You can also send individual performers fan mail and care packages care of the theatre at which we are currently performing or will be performing. Go to the theatre's website (listed above), find their mailing address, write the actor's name as well as "Spring Awakening" and send c/o the theatre. Remember, we are often at these theatres for only a week so make sure to allow for delivery times. It's a better bet to send it to the theatre we will be going to next as they can always hold packages for us until we arrive. Letters received late will not be forwarded to our next location.
2. How Can I Audition for Spring Awakening?
From time to time, we have open calls in larger cities across the US. We will post any additional open calls here. Subscribe if you havn't already to keep informed. In the meantime, we've made it easy for you to submit yourself singing a folk/alternative rock song on video. Go to: http://www.springawakening.com/videoauditionsubmission/ Make sure your submission is less than 500 MB and is one of the accepted formats. Your screen should change and you should get a confirmation that says your submission has been received. Trust us, people are called in this way. Lucas Wells was cast because of an online submission!
3. How Do I Score On Stage Seats?
That is really up to the individual theatres. Most of them won't release the seats until just before performances because they want to make sure the house is sold first. Some do so online, although the ticketing systems they have in place often can't accommodate our unique seats onstage. Most of them are available only at the box office (though you can purchase them for a performance in the future). The Guilty Ones Street Team members have the rights to purchase these seats before the general public. Any seats left over will be released to the box office and may also be purchased as part of rush tickets (discounted, day-of tickets).
4. How Do I Join The Guilty Ones?
The National Guilty Ones Street Team is a way for fans of the show in each of our tour stops to help us spread the word. You will get access to parties, meet and greets, and other special events while meeting new friends who share your passion for the show, all while gaining some valuable marketing experience. You must be at least 15 yrs old. Email your contact info to nationalguiltyones (at) gmail (dot) com.
5. Can I Get Discounts?
From time to time, a theatre may offer us discounts to send out to our fans. We will post any here on the blog. Subscribe now!
6. Who runs this site? This site was created for fans to stay connected with our touring cast and follow their adventures around North America. Ideally, it would be in the voice of the cast members. Unfortunately, our cast members are often too tired or busy to post lengthy blog posts on a regular basis. Company members will contribute a post from time to time and every month we will have a compiled blog post that most every company member will participate in. The other stuff like updates, etc, will be posted by me. My name is Pun. I work for the production, love this show, its cast, and our fans, and I'm so very glad you're here!
