If we cannot make the audition, is it possible to still send in a resume and headshot?

Unknown said...

I wish I was 17 :(

Pun (blog admin) said...

Greg, we need more than just a resume and headshot. You must put yourself on tape singing a rock/alt song and upload to: http://www.springawakening.com/videoauditionsubmission

(more instructions at the site)

Sorry, I have one more question. I am going to be turning 17 in October; am I still eligable to attend and participate in the open calls?

Anonymous said...

I have a similar question to Greg's, I've already submitted a video to the site, but I was wondering, since I'm only sixteen, am I immediately eliminated? As a side note, my birthday is in September, so yeah.

Pun (blog admin) said...

Greg, Psychopathic,

You must be 18 to tour. They lowered it to 17 since most 17 year olds will be 18 by the time they finish rehearsals and go out...(most of the current cast has year long contracts). 16 is a little more of a stretch.

That said, unless there are hoards of people, you should be able to be seen. I'd encourage you to go anyways...auditioning will be good experience for you regardless of whether or not they can use you when they need you. Just don't lie if they ask you your age.

I don't have a passport! Can you tell us about any open calls that will be in the US?

Anonymous said...

Hey!
I'm turning 17 in May (woohoo!) but since I can't make it to the open call I just submitted a tape online. (I didn't actually say when I was going to be turning 17...hmm and I look pretty young for my age) I actually currently don't live in the US/Canada sooo.... :S but I just tried out for fun. Anyway, good luck to everyone! :) x

How do I make a resume?
what do I have to include in it?

Pun (blog admin) said...

Here's a good sample actor's resume: http://www.jobbankusa.com/resumewrite/ResumeTemplates/actor_actress_resume_template.html

You can fust with the format, but usually it should all be in the same font (though you can use different font sizes, etc) and your font should not be script. It should be easy to read and organized.

If you don't have professional credits, it's fine, just put down all relevant experience (school plays, church choir, rock band, vocal coach, etc).
If you don't even have that, you can include a personal statement. Example : "I don't have any formal training but plan on taking a drama class next semester and starting vocal lessons."

Didnt they cast a 16 year old in the broadway show??

timmyt09 said...

Just a couple questions:

I would LOVE to audition, and I read this and immediately thought "I need to do this!" However, I don't know if I would need a passport, seeing as I would have to travel from Indianapolis. ALSO, it says they're looking for people 17-21, but I'm 22 - and definitely don't look any older than 17! Would they consider me? Thanks for the updates, and I'm hoping to hear back that I'll be able to audtion! (If it helps any, I JUST turned 22 on March 12th! haha)

Anonymous said...

Timmy, I believe they will require a passport. You didn't used to need one, but I think that's changing. Check the state dept website or google Canada border crossing documentation.

You shud def audition if u look young 4 ur age. We have cast members older than u.

Come see the show while ur in Toronto!

Anonymous said...

This is completely random and doesn't have anything to do with auditioning, but it just popped into my head today. Is Spring Awakening the only musical that has the cast greet fans at the stage door?

timmyt09 said...

Thanks, Pun!
I know Chase is 23, so I was hoping I'd be able to audition - I just wanted to make sure when I show up I won't be turned away! haha

I would come see the show while in town, but I'm going to see it in Louisville, and it's a stretch to pay for the traveling to Toronto! haha. I just checked on needing a passport to enter Canada from the US, and starting June 1, 2009 you will need one. Until then, you just need a valid picture ID and documentation of valid citizenship (birth cert., etc.). Thanks for the help, Pun! Are there any more details that you know of for auditions?... like auditions start at 11am, right? So do you have a recommendation as to what time to actually get there? (And no AEA is needed, right?)

Anonymous said...

this may be off topic...
but when r the answers to our questions for the profile of the month going to be posted?
i want to see Kyle Riabko's answers!

Pun said...

Anonymous asks: Didnt they cast a 16 year old in the broadway show?? Yes, Lilly, Jennifer and Caitlin were all 16, but lived or moved to NYC with their parent. To tour without a guardian, you must be 18.

SA Fan said, " Is Spring Awakening the only musical that has the cast greet fans at the stage door?" No, fans will congregate at the stage door waiting for their favorite actors to come out for many shows, it really is up to the actors if they want to come out and say hi to fans or not. Our show has the benefit of being filled with generous actors who love to talk with the fans because the show means just as much to them as it does to the fans.

Timmy writes, " So do you have a recommendation as to what time to actually get there? (And no AEA is needed, right?)" Timmy, I'd suggest getting there around 9 am if you can. Doors will prolly open at 10 if previous open calls are any indication. That's right, you don't have to be Actor's Equity. Thanks for reporting back on the no passport situation! I hope Cassie who posted above is reading!

How long will it take the committee to go through all the online submissions?

Anonymous said...

How fast do they look at the online submissions? Do they check and watch them everyday etc?

Anonymous said...

I know that they request a rocky/folksy song for the audition, but would it be really bad if I just sang a song from the show? Also, I should I sing it more rockish, with minor vibrato or does it matter how I approach the song?

Anonymous said...

Can you recommend any songs that have a Moritz-vibe to it? I am finding it very difficult searching for the perfect song : )

Anonymous said...

are there any race specifications?

Anonymous said...

Absolutely not. We have aggressively pursued a color blind casting policy. This show lends itself to it.

Anonymous said...

Answering some questions:

Yes, it would be bad to sing a song from the show. You'll get to sing from the show in a callback situation.

I can't recommend songs for you,it's very personal. You should choose a song that you connect with and that shows off your voice the best.

We've hired extra casting people specifically to watch the videos so yes, they will be viewed often. How soon you hear back depends on when they need to replace the character you're right for.

Anonymous said...

If we can't get the online submission page to work, is there still an address to which we can send a resume/headshot/DVD audition?

Thanks in advance!

Anonymous said...

I was trying to look on here to see if this question had already been answered because I didnt want to be annoying and repeat a question, but I couldnt find the answer. Anyways, are there going to be any auditions coming up at all in the U.S.? And if so, where/when will they be held? And if not, thanks anyway. Also, would a Beatle's song be okay to sing? Thanks!

Pun said...

Anonymous, there will undoubtedly be more auditions in the USA. Which cities and when is totally up in the air, but they have tended to be at big cities and coinciding with long stops on the tour. It's a good idea to submit a video audition now even if we happen to have an open call in your city in the future. Yes, Beatles are golden.

Anonymous said...

Thanks so much! It's awesome that you take the time to answer everyone's questions. It's really appreciated.

Jessica said...

Is there a specific date I should get my video in by?

Anonymous said...

Sorry, Pun, but does this mean that they are only accepting video auditions and there is no address for hard submissions?

I can't get the website to work for me, lol.

Thank you!

Pun said...

Jessica, there is no cut off date as it will be ongoing, however, I would say sooner is better than later..don't put it off.

Anonymous, you need to make sure that the format you are submitting the file is one of the accepted formats and is no larger than 500 MB.

Alternatively, you can also snail mail your DVD to: JIM CARNAHAN, SPRING AWAKENING c/o Roundabout Theatre Co 231 W 39th Street Suite 1200 New York, N.Y. 10018.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Pun! You rock!

Anonymous said...

I'm wondering if it would be alright to accompany myself on the piano at the open call?

Anonymous said...

I was wondering if it would be alright for me to sing a song by The Fugees even though they are not technically alt. rock.

Anonymous said...

how do you become a member in the pit (strings)... and how old do you have to be, is the age 18 as well?

Anonymous said...

hey! do you NEED to bring sheet music, or can you just sing a cappella if you can't find sheet music? Sorry if this has been answered before!

Pun said...

I do not recommend you accompany yourself on piano, mostly b/c 1) we are not judging you on your piano skills and 2) we want to see your face and how you ACT the song, not you looking down at the keys.

I think the Fugees could be considered rock. Again, it's what you connect to. Think about the project you are auditioning for, and ask if that song will show off the part of you that will tell people immediately where to put you in the show. One of the Fugees' rap songs might not be the best choice, you know?

We are not considering musicians at the moment. Kim Grigsby usually pulls from people she knows.Yes, u have 2 b 18.

Yes, you should have sheet music. U will be considered unprofessional if you don't. We need to know you can follow music.

Anonymous said...

What is the latest you can arrive at the open call? Thank you

Pun (blog admin) said...

Based on past auditions, I reaaallly suggest you get there no later than 11. Earlier if you can. You're welcome to take your chances and come later, but others have been shut out due to the number of people auditioning. Varies depending on the # of people auditioning, I estimate it will go to about 4 pm.

Sorry if this question has been asked but do we have to sing the whole song, or 16 bars? how much should we have prepared?

Unknown said...

How long is it going to be touring for? I'm too young to audition for it now, but I'd love to be a part of it in the future. Would there be a another chance to audition in a year or so?

Jess Padron said...

If you audition in the states later, is it ok if you're canadian? Or do you have to be american or have a work visa?

Pun said...

Usually you will only be asked for 16 bars. At more crowded auditions, it's been cut to 8, but I don't think that will happen.

Hopefully we will still be touring in a few years, but that is out of our control; up to demand and ticket sales.

You can get a tourist visa to audition in the states later and if you land a role, we will provide the papers you will need to get a work visa. This only applies to Canadians and only for the North American tour.

Leorahhh said...

Ahhhhh, God, I have never hated being fifteen so much.
Thank you Pun, for all the helpful information. I'm just hoping and praying [only not really praying to any deity] that SA keeps touring forever so I can audition one day.

Anonymous said...

When will the open audition dates in the US be announced? And I have been at the NYC open call for the show last year. I was not "typed out" so am I in some sort of database or something?

Anonymous said...

Can you give any indication of whether there might be an audition in Philadelphia, maybe when the tour stops there?

Is there a possibility of further auditions in Canada, for instance Vancouver !?

Pun (blog admin) said...

Hmm..Anonymous, I think your best bet for now is to submit yourself via video audition. See FAQ below.

Anonymous said...

Do you know if there will be anymore open auditions in the future, because I, very unfortunatly, missed the ones in Boston by a month!

Amy said...

If you're 15 (and will be 16 before the end of the run) will you even be considered? Or will they consider you if another tour comes up in a few years?

Amy said...

And could you tour with a parent? I know younger kids who have done that, and been tutored while doing a run of a show on tour.

Mary said...

Is there any idea as to what the open call schedule will be for the rest of 2009? I have searched the internet, but can't find anything. Also, I have considered sending in a video, but I have braces. =( I am getting them off in a few months...will that affect me in any way?

Pun said...

Amy, you will not be considered if you are 16 and we don't allow parents to tour with you, Sorry.

Mary, it looks like we have our replacement cast and there won't be a need to have more open calls in the near future. Any future replacements we might need will be culled from our files and from the video submissions. It's OK that you have braces--we're searching for authentic teens after all. Just say in the video when you expect them off.

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

I was just wondering, I sent in an audition tape with headshot and resume for the tour... I am currently 17 but will turn 18 in Decmeber. Would the directors concider a teen that is about to turn 18 for the tour (providing the teen has what teh directors are looking for)

Hopefully this made sense!
Thank you!

Jay said...

Hey!
My friend wanted to know, if he thinks that his audition tape was bogous, can he send in another one???
(I told him it was unlikely but, you're the professional, you know better than I do)

Celena Marie said...

HI! So my brother has always accompanied me on the guitar for many of my previous auditions. So can we bring our own accompanist to the Spring Awakening audition?

Thanks, Celena Marie

Pun (blog admin) said...

Celena, very sorry, but these auditions were for April of last year. It's too late to audition now. : (

Celena Marie said...

hahah ohhh sorry. Well, are they going to recast Spring Awakening anytime soon or hold auditions for next years tour?

Thanks :)

Pun (blog admin) said...

Celena, I'd recommend you submit a video audition. Instructions in the FAQ section below.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can I send fan mail to the cast?

If you just want to send a quick note to all the cast members telling them you appreciate their work, you can email us here at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. I will be happy to forward your email to the cast, but to preserve their privacy, it is unlikely they will email you back (I will, though).

You can also send individual performers fan mail and care packages care of the theatre at which we are currently performing or will be performing. Go to the theatre's website (listed above), find their mailing address, write the actor's name as well as "Spring Awakening" and send c/o the theatre. Remember, we are often at these theatres for only a week so make sure to allow for delivery times. It's a better bet to send it to the theatre we will be going to next as they can always hold packages for us until we arrive. Letters received late will not be forwarded to our next location.

2. How Can I Audition for Spring Awakening?
From time to time, we have open calls in larger cities across the US. We will post any additional open calls here. Subscribe if you havn't already to keep informed. In the meantime, we've made it easy for you to submit yourself singing a folk/alternative rock song on video. Go to: http://www.springawakening.com/videoauditionsubmission/ Make sure your submission is less than 500 MB and is one of the accepted formats. Your screen should change and you should get a confirmation that says your submission has been received. Trust us, people are called in this way. Lucas Wells was cast because of an online submission!

3. How Do I Score On Stage Seats?
That is really up to the individual theatres. Most of them won't release the seats until just before performances because they want to make sure the house is sold first. Some do so online, although the ticketing systems they have in place often can't accommodate our unique seats onstage. Most of them are available only at the box office (though you can purchase them for a performance in the future). The Guilty Ones Street Team members have the rights to purchase these seats before the general public. Any seats left over will be released to the box office and may also be purchased as part of rush tickets (discounted, day-of tickets).

4. How Do I Join The Guilty Ones?

The National Guilty Ones Street Team is a way for fans of the show in each of our tour stops to help us spread the word. You will get access to parties, meet and greets, and other special events while meeting new friends who share your passion for the show, all while gaining some valuable marketing experience. You must be at least 15 yrs old. Email your contact info to nationalguiltyones (at) gmail (dot) com.

5. Can I Get Discounts?

From time to time, a theatre may offer us discounts to send out to our fans. We will post any here on the blog. Subscribe now!

6. Who runs this site? This site was created for fans to stay connected with our touring cast and follow their adventures around North America. Ideally, it would be in the voice of the cast members. Unfortunately, our cast members are often too tired or busy to post lengthy blog posts on a regular basis. Company members will contribute a post from time to time and every month we will have a compiled blog post that most every company member will participate in. The other stuff like updates, etc, will be posted by me. My name is Pun. I work for the production, love this show, its cast, and our fans, and I'm so very glad you're here!
