Exclusive Video: Cast's Audition Songs

Exclusive Video: Cast's Audition Songs

Many of you have or will audition for Spring Awakening. Over the years, we've fielded literally hundreds of questions from you about appropriate audition songs for Spring Awakening. The creatives always state they prefer an alternative rock/folk song and not musical theatre songs, but as you can see in this video from the Rochester Cabaret at Method Machine a few weeks ago, that rule comes with some exceptions. In the end, the song that shows off what you can do well and the song that you have a strong personal connection to will serve you best. What songs did the touring cast audition with? We'll do better than tell you. We'll show you.

Rochester Cabaret: Spring It On planned by Sarah Hunt and Anthony Lee Medina, hosted by Steffi D and Taylor Trensch. Thanks to Krystina Alabado for this two part video:

Oh my gosh...Matt Shingledecker + Jesus Christ Superstar = EPIC WIN. I would love to see him as Jesus of Nazareth or Judas. He would be amazing! And I just saw Ted Neeley in the touring company on Sunday! And Sarah Hunt as Mary Magdalene! This was great! I can't wait for part 2!

does this mean we can still audition for spring awakening even though it closes in 3 months?
is there any news of a revival or 2nd national tour or something, so we can still audition?

Linus--I think "8" for Anthony would have sufficed, don't you...?

Anonymous--Isn't Justin great? I'm glad people are able to see more of his talent through these videos.

Anonymous--There will be a non-equity tour after this first national tour is over, but we havn't been given any info on it. I assume auditions will be announced in the near future.

yeah i agree with Pun, linus. Anthony deserves better reviews. he was really good. and he has performed very well in other cabaret shows (Ex: Lost in the Wilderness) and is amazing in the show.

Okay, I TOTALLY agree with the ninth comment, or Anonymous #5. My life without Spring, now that Spring's in it, would be empty. And sad. So now there's hope! YAYAY!

I hope the new tour continues with the blogs and youtube videos! =] What's the difference between a non-equity tour and the tour that's going now?

Also, I must say that Gabby Garza has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.

Joanna, good question! One difference between a non-equity tour and the first national tour is that the performers will not be professional actors. That sometimes makes a difference in the overall quality of some shows, but I don't think it will for Spring Awakening since many of our young cast weren't Equity (the national union of professional actors) when we found them. Another difference is that most non-union tours will come to smaller venues or venues that don't normally present first run Broadway shows. Again, the intimacy of smaller venues could actually benefit our show. Lastly, the show is licensed out so the Broadway producing team or creatives don't really have a hand in putting it together. Sometimes they will rent equipment, props or scenery from the professional tour, but often, it means that more creative license can be taken. We'll have to find out how different it will be, but it's also exciting that the show we all love can continue to evolve and take on different forms.

so will the show have to be different? like...michael mayer isnt going to direct it?
