We are having a mandatory Actor's Equity open call in New York City for potential replacements for the touring cast (if needed). There are no other open calls planned at this time in any part of the country. Video submissions are still being accepted. Actors who are not part of the union will be seen if time permits. Come early.
Seeking possible future replacements. All actors must be at least 18 years old:
Melchior Gabor: Seeking young adult (18+) to play 15 – 16. Melchior is a brilliant, headstrong golden boy who is troubled by the hypocrisy he encounters all around him. Trying to find his place in the world. Requires a great actor with a superb folk-rock/pop-rock voice.
Moritz Stiefel: Seeking young adult (18+) to play 15 – 16. Moritz is a high-strung, nervous and troubled youth. Confused by his sexual yearnings. Melchior’s best friend. Requires a great comic actor with a great pop-rock voice.
Wendla Bergman: Seeking young adult (18+) to play 15 – 16. Wendla is a lovely, fresh young girl on the edge of adolescence who is haunted by dark thoughts and learns to stand up for herself. Requires a strong actress with a great folk-rock/pop-rock voice.
Ilse: Seeking young adult (18+) to play 15 – 16. Ilse is the most sexually advanced of the girls. Pretends to be a jaded sophisticate, but is actually damaged and sensitive. Must play piano. Requires a fantastic folk-rock/pop-rock voice.
Adult Man: 40s. Actor plays a variety of roles including teachers and fathers. Must be very versatile.
Adult Woman: 40s. Actress plays a variety of roles including teachers and mothers. Must be very versatile.

If we got a callback for a recent audition but haven't heard anything since is there a good chance we're still on a list, or is it okay to send in a video? I don't know if being on file only applies to people who had more than a next-day callback.
It sounds to me as if they're not really looking for anyone & they're only holding auditions because they have to for the Actor's Equity.
I thought so. I was wondering though and now that there's a new notice posted I figured it'd be okay to ask.

Anonymous, if you got called back, you are most definitely on a list (congrats for getting called back, by the way).
It's true that this is a mandatory call, but that doesn't mean that we might not need replacements in the future (it happens all the time in this biz...actors leaving to do pilots, film projects, etc). If they find someone at this EPA which blows them away, you can be sure they will be put on the list. Mandatory doesn't mean perfunctory.
If you feel you would like to show off a different song or different side of you, by all means submit another video audition. It can't hurt to remind them.

for some odd reason, the website won't let me submit an online audition. I've tried several times from different computers since July, but no luck. I've made sure that my files don't accumulate to over 500MB, still no luck. What can I do?

So, I submitted a Video audition, but I'm 16. Before, in the broadway cast at least and to my knowledge, it was ages 15+. Do I have no chance or is it just the open call that is 18 or older?
Bri- You have to be 18 to tour without a guardian. The Broadway cast could be younger because their parents moved with them to New York or close by. It's always good to audition, though.

To the Anonymous who couldn't submit your video, the Anonymous who replied to you is right..it's usually the format. If you really can't make it work, pop it on YouTube and email me the link, attaching your headshot/resume. I'll forward it to the casting peeps for you.
I won't be auditioning at this call, but I'm curoius for the future... at non-video live auditions like this, is the accompanist always for piano or is there any chance of having guitar accompaniment? I'm not trying to be picky, it's just sometimes harder to find rock/folk literature for piano than for guitar or such similar instruments.
Having a guitar accompanist is extremely rare. I've never heard of it, and we have never provided one before.
Some have asked if they can accompany themselves on guitar. To that question, I'd say, sure, you can-- although be careful because we want to see you and how you act the song, we don't want to see someone looking down at their frets. Also, for a multitude of reasons, including pitch exactness, piano is preferred.
But wait, so, if I had a guardian with me on the tour (this is on the OFF-off-off chance that I were to audition and get in) I would be allowed to? Sorry for all the questions, but this show means the world to me and it would be absolutely wonderful to have the chance to be a part of it.
Yeah, I'm sorry, Bri. If we hired minors for a tour, we'd be obligated to hire and house tutors and wranglers (even if your guardian was willing to do all of it for free), might need to double cast,etc. It's silly I know, the difference of just one or two years. Let Krista Pioppi's story be an inspiration for you. She had to wait three years to be cast. Your time will come-- if not for this show, then the right show. Keep the dream alive and continue your training so that when the time comes, you'll be prepared. Thank you for loving SA as much as you do.

No problem, I completely understand.
So, I've been meaning to submit an audition for maybe a year now(yeah i know...) but everytime I think i have something solid to sing, I start second guessing my choice. I know the requirements are to sing a of the folk/rock genre and to ignore any music theatre song, but would it be acceptable to sing a Joe Iconis song?
ps.Do you have any tips on calming your nerves? I dont know what I'm so tense about.
Anonymous - Your song choice is your own personal thing. The casting team wants a folk/rock/alt rock song, so it's best to stick with that or at least close. If you think Joe Iconis fits, then go for it! Definitely best to stay away from musical theatre, though.
Find a favorite song that you love to sing and that you think showcases your voice the best. If you're comfortable with it and you love the song it will show on your tape.
As for nerves, try not to focus on getting the notes perfect. Take a deep breath, sing the song and make a few videos, then pick your favorite and send it in. It isn't an audition, it's a chance to perform for them. Show 'em what you're all about! Have fun and break a leg!

I agree with Casey Beth. It's very much a personal choice...you might as well ask us to choose your boyfriend for you. Choose a song that shows off your vocal range and best captures what you can do. It helps to have a personal connection to the song. Remember, we're looking for you to "act" the song.
Nerves are mainly a result of not being super prepared. Find an accompanist to practice with (most people practice to a CD and get thrown when a live piano plays it in the audition room). Get your friends together and practice auditioning with them (entering the room, saying hi, etc). You should know your song so well that you won't forget words under the additional pressure of auditioning. Go in to the audition room thinking of the casting director as one of your friends. The most important thing is to be yourself.
Ok this might be a dumb question....but if you graduated from high school but you're 17 can you still not be in the show?!

Yes, I would say go for it, especially since we don't know when the non-equity tour will kick off. You could be 18 by then!

to add to my previous comment it was an Equity Chorus Call, sorry forgot to mention that. And it did not say what it was for, I figured the tour but I am still unsure.

Samantha, for every professional production, Equity requires us to have an open call periodically, regardless of whether replacements are needed at the time or not. I'm sorry that you were typed out. Usually that means that there are too many people there than can be seen in the day. They will usually pick out the people that look like they can believably play 14-15. Are you especially tall or do you have characteristics that make you look older? I would do a video submission and make an effort to look younger.
There should also be more news soon about auditions for the non-union tour.

I am just under 5'7 so that could be why I geuss. but it's strange because my headshot was taken when I was 14 I geuss it makes me look older. I will definetly consider making a video submission.

Sam, I can't know for sure why you were typed out. In a situation where they have so many people and can't possibly see everyone, it could have been for the most silly and minute reason possible. Being tall shouldn't, ideally, disqualify you. Sarah Hunt, for instance, is tall. Don't take it personally--it's not like you can do anything about it--and give it another try.
