New TotallyTrucked Videos: World of Coke Part 5 & 6

Steffi D goes filmmaker, featuring Coke's very own Jim as the "The Dumb Waiter." Theatre historians will know that this is a very sly nod to Harold Pinter's one act, The DumbWaiter." Check out her artsy short film, an insightful commentary on the needs of our consumer driven society and an existential polemic on our frustrations when faced with the reality that in the end, we are all alone.

WORLD PREMIERE of short film "The Dumb Waiter by filmmaker extraordinaire Steffi D

We then continue on the World of Coke tour, hitting the taste test of sodas from around the world. Ever heard of flavors such as "Smart Apple" from China, "Vegi Beta" from Japan and "Beverly" from Italy? Watch out for the aftertaste guys, it can be lethal.

Detroit News--Interview with Steffi D

"An avid theater buff from adolescence, [Steffi] recalls annual trips with her mother from Ottawa to New York, where she would cram in as many shows as possible in a week. "But I'd never seen anything like 'Spring Awakening,' " she says. "Nothing ever struck me that hard. I was going through a lot at that time, feeling like those kids onstage, an outcast trying to fit in but not fitting in."

Detroit Theatre Examiner--Interview with Matthew Shingledecker
"Advice for young people in Motown pursuing theatre careers...Just continue to give it your all because one day it’s going to happen. If you believe it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen, because you have to have a good attitude about it. I think the most important thing is to be happy for yourself and for your fellow people going in for shows. It is a cut-throat business, but at the same time, the people who are happiest are the ones who love the people next to them who are getting cast. It makes every ‘no’ that you get from an audition a ‘yes,’ because you hear about your friend or somebody getting a role instead of you sometimes, that’s okay. That’s a good thing. Because if you can be happy with that, then the career is going to blossom and shine."

Season premiere GLEE tonight! Interview with Lea and Jon

We're so proud of our alums and how Spring Awakening has helped to bring a new generation of bright young talent to the public eye. As everyone knows, Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff were Spring Awakening's original Wendla and Melchoir on Broadway. They forged a tight bond that endures to this day. Spring Awakening fans can see them reunited in the season premiere of "GLEE" tonight on FOX when Jonathan plays the lead singer of rival choir "Vocal Adrenaline." Check out this great interview with them in the New York Times today. It really captures their relationship and may answer some of your burning questions, such as, "Did Lea get Jonathan cast on the show..?" Read on:

Lea Michele: I hate Jonathan Groff. I’m so excited that someone’s finally doing a story on how awful Jonathan Groff is.
Jonathan Groff: And I’m so sick of being in the same room as her, too.
Michele: I’m just really glad that somebody finally is ready to write about this. It needed to get out there.
Groff: Time to tell the truth.

Q.

Did your paths ever cross before you started working together on “Spring Awakening”?

A.

Groff: No, Lea was busy on Broadway and I was busy waiting tables.
Michele: When I saw Jonathan at the “Spring Awakening” audition, I had done, prior to the Off Broadway production, I think three workshops of the show. And I had worked with two prior Melchiors. They’d narrowed it down to a couple guys, and Jonathan was one of them. And I was like, this boy is so sweet – I was trying to help him out – but poor thing’s not going to get this job. I felt bad for him, and then he ended up obviously getting the part and just being incredible.
Groff: As each potential Melchior would walk into the room, she would shake our hands and tell us that she had played Wendla in the past three workshops. And I remember before we did the beating scene, which was our audition scene, she had a specific way in which you were to hit her on the wrist with your pencil.
Michele: Well, what I was trying to do, with the Melchiors that I liked, was give them little pointers so that Michael Mayer would like them. And Jonathan was one of them. I liked him, but a lot of it was also out of pity. He looked very different from how he looks right now. Jonathan used to wear pants that were like 10 sizes too small on him. But not in, like, a skinny way – in like a “these were my skinny pants that I wore in the fifth grade” way. They were short at the ankles, and sweaters that had been washed in the washing machine, and not dry-cleaned.
Groff: And the CVS gel in the hair.
Michele: I definitely helped Jonathan with that look over time.
Groff: Yes, every time there’s a birthday or an occasion, the gift I get from Lea is pretty much always clothes.

Q.

“Spring Awakening” required you to reveal yourselves to each other in many ways. Did that kind of intimacy come naturally or did you have to work at it?

A.

Michele: We definitely connected right away, but I never would have guessed in a million years that we would become as comfortable as we did with one another. Because we are so different, and we’d come from two completely different backgrounds. It’s not like one thing happened; it’s just been a progression, professionally, and friendship-wise, that’s just, I think, always continued to grow.
Groff: It’s like country mouse and city mouse, the two of us. Lea’s very Upper West Side, New York, and I’m from Pennsylvania. What was really interesting for me is after “Spring Awakening” was over, you do shows with people and you get close with them and then they’re over, and relationships remain or don’t remain. With Lea and I, our relationship had been completely defined by our working environment. But the amazing thing is after the show was over, we continued to remain close, which is the true testament of a friendship.
Q.

Who left the show first?
A.

Michele: We left on the same night. There would have been no way I could have ever done the show without Jonathan.
Groff: Likewise.
Michele: What we created was very personal – it wasn’t even an option.

Q.

When I saw “Spring Awakening” I had to cut out before the end. I assume everything worked out O.K. for Wendla and Melchior?

A.

Michele: Yeah. Totally. They’re all good. They’ve had more children. They waited a little while to have any more. But now they’re great, they’re awesome. They’re model parents. [laughs]

Last Profile of the Month: Taylor Trensch

You guys voted, and Taylor Trensch, our lovable, tortured Moritz, will be the last profile of the month for this leg of the tour.
We plucked Taylor out of his tenure at Elon University in North Carolina (where he went with his 'mentor' Matt Shingledecker) after Taylor submitted a video audition. Almost every single review since he joined the tour has singled out his heartbreaking performance and this young star received the 'Best Supporting Actor in a Musical' Ovation Award given by the Denver Post after our stint at the Denver Theatre Center. Leave your questions for Taylor as a comment below. If you don't have an accepted sign in, you can leave your post as 'anonymous,' but make sure you include your name in your post! Questions can be submitted until Friday, April 16th.

Lucas Wells Profile of the Month Part II

It's Part 2 of Lucas Wells' Profile of the Month!  This once-jock turned Les Mis-gleek talks about his dream role and where his red hair originated.  Lucas shares some thoughts on his 18 months of rooming with buddy Andy Mientus and his discovery of being a sleep talker!  Check out Lucas' parting words in one of our last profile of the Month vids.

Here are the questions asked in this part:

6. Now for your roots. Brendan asks:

a) Are you excited to come back to Detroit and play your home area of Southeastern Michigan?
b) From Mariah: what got you into theatre?
c) Dylan and Connor from Cleveland adds: Did you do theatre in high school and college? What shows did you perform in, what roles?

7. Mariah, Jo Ellen, Stephanie and Anonymous want to know:

a) What is your dream role?
b) What book, movie or TV show would you like to turn into a musical?

8. Missa, Alex and Layla said: We know you’re a huge fan of Glee.

a) If you were to create a role for yourself on that show, what would it be?
b) What song would you want to perform?
c) Can you sing some of it for us?

9. Another most asked question: Who has been your favorite kiss: Christy, Angie, Andy or Ben and more importantly, WHY?

10. From Riley:

Lucas, you are so talented! In some of the TotallyTrucked videos, it has been mentioned that you and Andy Mientus typically room together. What is the most outrageous/hilarious thing that has happened while you have been rooming with each other? Hailey adds, “you so should win the Team Mientus vs Team Wells debate--redheads ARE cuter”.

The SA cast and crew are taking a Spring break of their own, so we will not be posting this Friday.  Enjoy the wonderful spring season and warm weather! More original Totally Trucked videos next week!

This is such a creative and cute video that we just had to share it with you. We also love the subtle use of the billboard for Spring Awakening in Dallas. Subliminal messaging at its best. LOL Only one weekend left to see us at the Winspear Opera House (new rave reviews just added to our Dallas post below, including a video featuring footage of Robi Hager as Hanschen) ! Thanks, Natalie, for allowing Spring Awakening into your heart. Leave comments below!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can I send fan mail to the cast?

If you just want to send a quick note to all the cast members telling them you appreciate their work, you can email us here at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. I will be happy to forward your email to the cast, but to preserve their privacy, it is unlikely they will email you back (I will, though).

You can also send individual performers fan mail and care packages care of the theatre at which we are currently performing or will be performing. Go to the theatre's website (listed above), find their mailing address, write the actor's name as well as "Spring Awakening" and send c/o the theatre. Remember, we are often at these theatres for only a week so make sure to allow for delivery times. It's a better bet to send it to the theatre we will be going to next as they can always hold packages for us until we arrive. Letters received late will not be forwarded to our next location.

2. How Can I Audition for Spring Awakening?
From time to time, we have open calls in larger cities across the US. We will post any additional open calls here. Subscribe if you havn't already to keep informed. In the meantime, we've made it easy for you to submit yourself singing a folk/alternative rock song on video. Go to: http://www.springawakening.com/videoauditionsubmission/ Make sure your submission is less than 500 MB and is one of the accepted formats. Your screen should change and you should get a confirmation that says your submission has been received. Trust us, people are called in this way. Lucas Wells was cast because of an online submission!

3. How Do I Score On Stage Seats?
That is really up to the individual theatres. Most of them won't release the seats until just before performances because they want to make sure the house is sold first. Some do so online, although the ticketing systems they have in place often can't accommodate our unique seats onstage. Most of them are available only at the box office (though you can purchase them for a performance in the future). The Guilty Ones Street Team members have the rights to purchase these seats before the general public. Any seats left over will be released to the box office and may also be purchased as part of rush tickets (discounted, day-of tickets).

4. How Do I Join The Guilty Ones?

The National Guilty Ones Street Team is a way for fans of the show in each of our tour stops to help us spread the word. You will get access to parties, meet and greets, and other special events while meeting new friends who share your passion for the show, all while gaining some valuable marketing experience. You must be at least 15 yrs old. Email your contact info to nationalguiltyones (at) gmail (dot) com.

5. Can I Get Discounts?

From time to time, a theatre may offer us discounts to send out to our fans. We will post any here on the blog. Subscribe now!

6. Who runs this site? This site was created for fans to stay connected with our touring cast and follow their adventures around North America. Ideally, it would be in the voice of the cast members. Unfortunately, our cast members are often too tired or busy to post lengthy blog posts on a regular basis. Company members will contribute a post from time to time and every month we will have a compiled blog post that most every company member will participate in. The other stuff like updates, etc, will be posted by me. My name is Pun. I work for the production, love this show, its cast, and our fans, and I'm so very glad you're here!
