Profile of the Month: Lucas Wells Part I

Spring Awakening Tour: Profile of the Month - Lucas Wells Part 1

It's a rarity to get a cast member who's played all the male roles in Spring Awakening, a feat accomplished by our very talented Lucas' Wells. Moritz, Ernst, Otto, Georg - all roles that would not have been if it wasn't for his online video submission from the lobby of a girl's restroom! No wonder Lucas was the top vote for one of our last POM - he's done it all! Thanks to Gabby and Justin for filming Part 1 of the "Prof of the Mof."

VIDEO

Here are the questions asked in this video:

1. Most asked question:
a) What was your favorite role and why?
b) What was the most nerve-racking role?
c) Any interesting stories or funny mess ups?

2. Irene from Guam, Layla, Alyssia, and Taylor from Columbus said:
I hear you auditioned for Spring Awakening by submitting a video online.
a) What song did you sing and how did that whole process go?
b) Any audition tips?

3. From Mari :
How did it come about that you would understudy both Moritz and Melchoir? This didn’t happen on Broadway. Was it a decision made after you auditioned?

4. Marianna and her friend had a few questions:
a) What exactly is the difference between the terms swing, ensemble, and understudy?
b) How do they decide which understudy goes on for each part when someone calls out?
c) Is it difficult to mentally prepare to play all the different roles?

5. Elizabeth and Rozzie posed:
In honor of the recent "doppelganger week" on Facebook, what celebrity have people said you look like, if any?

Fan Friday: The Greenville Stage Door

The experience of Spring Awakening does not end after the house lights come up. On this blog, we announce the location of the stage door in every city we go to because we love talking with our fans. Not every Broadway show will have such an open policy or such generous company members. In fact, you may have seen many touring productions in your town and never, ever, entertained the notion of meeting the cast afterwards! It's rarely done, especially on tour. But know that at Spring Awakening, we welcome it. Perhaps it's because having audience members sit on stage with us makes the whole experience more intimate. Or because we see so many repeat customers and start recognizing faces. Most likely, it's because we share the same passion for the show that you do. If you've never done it before, this video by xNeonBwayx and photos by Randy WIlliams--both from the Peace Center in Greenville SC a few weeks ago-- will give you a better idea of what you can expect.

Spring Awakening in Dallas!

We're messin' with Texas for two weeks!

Dallas is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States--and we plan to have fun here. The fun started yesterday with celebrating Shi Shi Gabor's birthday. Happy Birthday Matt! First thing some company members did after checking into swanky loft digs? Went out and tried to blend in with the locals:

Freddy Hall tweets: "I've been in Texas for five hours and already got me a real cowboy hat and some good ol ridin' boots." Anthony Lee Medina tweeted, "Gonna be a cowboy for two weeks. Heck Yes!"

TICKETS We're honored to be part of the inaugural season at the new, gorgeous AT&T Performing Arts Center. Come see us at the Winspear Opera House from March 23-April 4th. Get yo' tickets here.

DID YOU KNOW? The Dallas Arts District, which includes the AT&T Performing Arts Center and four other state of the art venues, is the largest urban arts district in the United States

POST SHOW DISCUSSIONS In our effort to create discussions about the issues presented in our show, the venue has arranged post show discussions with local experts. Check out that schedule here.

STAGE DOOR: After the show, come and say howdy! Stage door is on NE side of building, adjacent to Jack Evans St.

CONTESTS: Still a chance to win two tix to Dallas. Ends 3/28: http://www.the33tv.com/community/contests/springawakening/

UPDATE: Here it is! (ugh--sound is a little off) http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/good_day/'spring-awakening'-cast-visits-good-day
Ugh, the sound technician really screwed this one up. You can barely hear the performance, only the interview afterwards.

REVIEWS

We couldn't have asked for more than this rave review from WFAA TV. "Brilliant. Some of the moments are simply breathtaking. It remains an important and defining work in American Musical Theatre." Check out some of the new footage of Robi Hager as Hanschen!

DALLAS MORNING NEWS "['TotallyFucked' is] one of the great moments of contemporary theater, and it's what won this musical eight 2007 Tony Awards on Broadway. The touring company nails it."

THEATERJONES A beautifully written rave review ("Life doesn't happen without some pain, as brilliantly depicted in Spring Awakening.") that also goes into the history and significance of the original play.http://theaterjones.com/index.php?section=reviews&id=20100324074354

KERA: Spring Awakening really succeeds at those moments when all the hormonal impatience and repressed teen energy are vividly transmitted by director Michael Mayer’s dark, aggressive staging and Bill T. PEGASUS NEWS and DALLAS THEATRE EXAMINER "Never before have I seen a musical with such deeply felt melancholy, such anarchy and volcanic disillusionment. Elicits deep shivers." http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2010/mar/29/theater-review-part-deux-spring-awakening-winspear/?refscroll=580

The next city where we have an extended run is Detroit (3 luxurious weeks without having to pack and get on a bus, whoo hoo!).

Okay, we hear Detroit is a fun town--there's a great alternative music scene--and you guys know we love alternative music-- but we also hear that parts of town are very dangerous.

Class Assignment: First Day of Spring

Class Assignment: First Day of Spring

The first day of spring is tomorrow! You can smell it in the air! In today's class, we found an anonymous poem about the awakening of spring and made a mad lib out of it. Company members were asked to fill in adjectives, nouns and verbs in the missing spaces. Well, we got some really creative and funny responses that we wanted to share and hope you enjoy it. Sometimes the madder the ad lib, the better! Let us know what you think of our crazy Spring Awakening poems!

Jake Epstein
The long whimsical winter is laughing away.
A single bulbus leaf was spotted today.

Through the hummus the vinaigrette is peeking.
Leprechauns are about and flesh-seeking.

There's still a chill in the proverbial air.
Winter is gone but the Canadians are still there.

Springtime is when the crazies pounce!

Marques Walls
The long harassing winter is fleeing away.
A single warm smile was spotted today.

Through the clouds the sun is peeking.
Mosquitos are about and DNA-seeking.

There's still a chill in the lingering air.
Winter is gone but the spirit is/are still there.

Springtime is when the fun begins !

Freddy Hall
The long lustful winter is texting away.
A single smart iPhone was spotted today.

Through the shoelace the toe is peeking.
Boats are about and Pad Thai-seeking.

There's still a chill in the uptight air.
Winter is gone but the movie Theater is still there.

Springtime is when the horses' neigh !

Pinky Weitzman
The long vaudevillian winter is va va vooming-ing away.
A single frolicsome throat-warbler mangrove was spotted today.

Through the entreaties the masculine solicitude is peeking.
Cripers, cruppers, croakers, and cluckens are about and SQUAWWWK-seeking.

There's still a chill in the clambaked air.
Winter is gone but the auto-suggestion is still there.

Springtime is when the dirigibles disgorge!

Steffi D
The long blue wind winter is whistling away.
A single mournful Moritz was spotted today.

Through the then, the none is peeking.
The mares are about and foal seeking.

There's still a chill in the purple summer air. (But it’s warm in your arms.)
Winter is gone but my junk is still there.

Springtime is when the stallions mate!

Fan Friday: Dedicated to Anyone Who's Lost Someone to Suicide

Our Fan Friday today is AJ Rafael, a talented young singer who has over a million views on his YouTube channel and over 29,000 followers on Twitter. He made a dedication video for anyone who's ever lost someone to suicide. We were really moved by his performance of "Left Behind" and we think you will be too. Why isn't HE on American Idol? ?

This is an issue that obviously means a lot to us. Suicide is often referred to as the selfish choice because the act itself doesn't affect the individual as much as it affects those he leaves behind.

You are not alone.

Thanks for calling attention to this cause, AJ! We're honored our song could be the vehicle for your message.

New Video: Make a Wish Child Jesse Pardee!

Jesse Pardee dreamed a dream. An 18 year old in Camillus, NY living with Ewing Sarcoma, she was granted one wish by the Make a Wish Foundation. Her dream was to audition for Spring Awakening. Michael Mayer, Kim Grigsby and our producers were so blown away by her talent that they decided to take her wish experience a step further. When we were in Rochester, NY, Jesse joined the cast by performing in the chair of rock for two shows!

In this video, Steffi D and Krystina Alabado makes sure Jesse gets the full SA cast treatment by giving her a "Hot Minute" interview. Check out the vid below and if you want to hear Jesse's musical talents, check out her Thoroughly Modern Mille/Secret Garden/I Dreamed A Dream renditions on YouTube! She's fantastic!

Atlanta is known for being the home of many Fortune 500 companies (including Coca-Cola, whose factory we will be touring this week--stay tuned for more soon!). A fitting tribute as we say goodbye to Andy this week.

Andy Mientus: "Don't Say Goodbye" plus Welcome Robi Hager

Next week in Atlanta will be Andy Mientus' last week on the tour. We are sad to have to say goodbye to one of our original tour members--especially one that has been a friend of the show for so long. Andy created our Facebook page, I Believe in Spring Awakening, at the very beginning of our run Off Broadway. We wish him luck in all his future endeavors. Here is a note that Andy wrote to everyone:

Dear Fans and Friends (Frands?),

Thank you so much for a year and a half of love, support, and inspiration. Your cheers and kind words reminded me daily why I do what I do, and I would never have been able to sustain a run this long without your enthusiasm. My journey with Spring Awakening began almost 4 years ago when I first saw the show and created a little fan group on a whim. Since then, the places this show has taken me, literally and spiritually, were beyond my imagination. I'm not sure what I did to deserve living a rockstar life for these many months, but as incredible as this has been, I am so truly excited for all of you to see what I and the rest of this beautiful company have up our sleeves. We always get such positive feedback from our cabaret performances because when you all see us perform the same words and music time after time, I think it is easy to forget that we are all dynamic artists with a breadth of dimensions to our talent. These people can do so much more than what you've seen and while I am fortunate to have been a part of something like Spring Awakening, I am most fortunate to have been inspired by all of the talent around me. So, with my departure, and the eventual departure of everyone in the cast, do not be sad or say goodbye- we are so thrilled to give you more to see.

I love your light,
Andy

We are excited to announce that taking over the role of Hanschen will be original Broadway cast member Robi Hager! Here is his bio:

ROBERT HAGER (Hanschen) Having just finished Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway, Robert is thrilled to come back to the Spring Awakening family, now on tour! Broadway: Bye Bye Birdie, Spring Awakening. NY Theater: Pippin, Captain Louie. WBT: The Who's Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables. Film: Clear Blue Tuesday. Proud AEA member.

SPRING AWAKENING IN DURHAM, NC

We're back in the south this week, in the "Bull" city! The brand spankin' new Durham Performing Arts Center is putting us up in some really nice digs. REVIEWS

HERALD SUN "Taylor Trensch, who plays Moritz, steals the show. "Spring Awakening" is also a talker and a show that makes you remember your own teen years and hope that those you know and love can navigate them unscathed."
http://www.heraldsun.com/view/full_story/6560084/article--Spring-Awakening--a-raw-look-at-teen-angst?instance=homeseventhleft

NEW OBSERVER Why “Spring Awakening” won eight Tony Awards is evident from the first few minutes. This innovative work, fitting an indie pop score to a century-old play, mixes traditional theater with rock concert. Although its treatment of teen sexuality, child abuse and societal repression is frank, raw and dark, no theater devotee should miss the national touring production now at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

What Would You Do? DALLAS

WHAT WOULD YOU DO DALLAS?

It's been a while since we've had the luxury of playing in a city for more than a single week. The next stop on the tour where we'll actually have some time to explore the city more is when we come to the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, TX. Do you know the city well? Please comment below with some suggestions of the best places to eat and fun things to do. Dallas is a big city! We don't necessarily want the things that can be found in any tourist guide. We want the "insider's" perspective. And if you have special access to things off the beaten path, email us at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. We can't promise we'll go to everything or make videos of everything, but you'll be a big help.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can I send fan mail to the cast?

If you just want to send a quick note to all the cast members telling them you appreciate their work, you can email us here at totallytruckedblog (at) gmail (dot) com. I will be happy to forward your email to the cast, but to preserve their privacy, it is unlikely they will email you back (I will, though).

You can also send individual performers fan mail and care packages care of the theatre at which we are currently performing or will be performing. Go to the theatre's website (listed above), find their mailing address, write the actor's name as well as "Spring Awakening" and send c/o the theatre. Remember, we are often at these theatres for only a week so make sure to allow for delivery times. It's a better bet to send it to the theatre we will be going to next as they can always hold packages for us until we arrive. Letters received late will not be forwarded to our next location.

2. How Can I Audition for Spring Awakening?
From time to time, we have open calls in larger cities across the US. We will post any additional open calls here. Subscribe if you havn't already to keep informed. In the meantime, we've made it easy for you to submit yourself singing a folk/alternative rock song on video. Go to: http://www.springawakening.com/videoauditionsubmission/ Make sure your submission is less than 500 MB and is one of the accepted formats. Your screen should change and you should get a confirmation that says your submission has been received. Trust us, people are called in this way. Lucas Wells was cast because of an online submission!

3. How Do I Score On Stage Seats?
That is really up to the individual theatres. Most of them won't release the seats until just before performances because they want to make sure the house is sold first. Some do so online, although the ticketing systems they have in place often can't accommodate our unique seats onstage. Most of them are available only at the box office (though you can purchase them for a performance in the future). The Guilty Ones Street Team members have the rights to purchase these seats before the general public. Any seats left over will be released to the box office and may also be purchased as part of rush tickets (discounted, day-of tickets).

4. How Do I Join The Guilty Ones?

The National Guilty Ones Street Team is a way for fans of the show in each of our tour stops to help us spread the word. You will get access to parties, meet and greets, and other special events while meeting new friends who share your passion for the show, all while gaining some valuable marketing experience. You must be at least 15 yrs old. Email your contact info to nationalguiltyones (at) gmail (dot) com.

5. Can I Get Discounts?

From time to time, a theatre may offer us discounts to send out to our fans. We will post any here on the blog. Subscribe now!

6. Who runs this site? This site was created for fans to stay connected with our touring cast and follow their adventures around North America. Ideally, it would be in the voice of the cast members. Unfortunately, our cast members are often too tired or busy to post lengthy blog posts on a regular basis. Company members will contribute a post from time to time and every month we will have a compiled blog post that most every company member will participate in. The other stuff like updates, etc, will be posted by me. My name is Pun. I work for the production, love this show, its cast, and our fans, and I'm so very glad you're here!
